The Abenaki of Bécancour...
From Yesterday to Today

The Abenaki Council of Wôlinak, in association with the Grand Council of the Waban-Aki Nation, as well as the Bécancour Industrial and Port Park Corporation, Parks Canada, the Secretariat for Indigenous Affairs, the Honorable Donald Martel, CN, Culture Centre-du-Québec, and HDS Productions are proud to present a historical video series titled “The Abenaki of Bécancour From Yesterday to Today.”

For nearly two decades, the Abenaki of Wôlinak have been involved in various scientific research projects related to the promotion of Indigenous culture. Most recently, with the creation of an interpretation center on the history of the Bécancour mission and the publication of the book The Forest of Two Worlds: Collective Representations and Landscape Transformation (1534-1934), the Abenaki Council of Wôlinak has firmly committed to disseminating its heritage.

Following these achievements and thanks to funding of $12,000 from the aforementioned partners, here are four video segments on the history of the Indigenous peoples of the region, particularly the Abenaki of Wôlinak. For the realization of this project, the Abenaki called upon two recognized professionals in their respective fields: historian Mario Marchand and producer-filmmaker Pierre St-Yves. In addition to the participation of Indigenous culture professionals, the documentary features testimonials from members of the Wôlinak community. Here are the four segments and their specific themes.
