Waste Management

Mission of the Environment and Land Office

A significant part of the Environment and Land Office (ELO) mission is to find and offer recovery services for the community to divert as much waste as possible from landfills. Landfills are very costly and damaging to the environment because, even though standards exist, a quantity of pollutants can end up in the air, water, and soil. In Quebec alone, an average of 5,000,000 tons of waste is landfilled annually, and of this number, approximately 50% of the materials could have had a second life.

The best way to protect the environment is by adopting the 3RVE principles:

  1. Reduce at the source: buy only what is necessary and choose products with minimal packaging;
  2. Reuse: reuse or buy from second-hand stores and donate or sell items in good condition that you no longer need;
  3. Recycle: recycle products/materials that can be recycled via the blue bin, composting, eco-centers, or other recovery programs. They will be transformed to make new products.
  4. Recover: repair, improve, modify what you have to give your objects another use instead of throwing them away.
  5. Eliminate: Only the ultimate residue should be sent to landfill, and only when none of the 4 principles can be applied or the object has reached the end of its useful life.

Composting

Composting

Composting is one of the best ways to reduce landfill pollution. Indeed, when organic materials decompose in landfills (without oxygen), they release biogas, including methane, which is one of the most powerful greenhouse gases (GHG). Thus, they contribute to global warming and ozone layer depletion.

With the goal of reducing our ecological footprint and pollution, the Environment and Land Office acquired a mechanized community composter to offer composting collection to its citizens. The composter, located within the community, also helps reduce pollution related to waste transportation.

Composting allows us to return to the Earth what it has given us!

Composting Brochure

Get your bin for free today by contacting us!

Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Fill your bin with your table scraps.
  2. On your collection day (see calendar), place your bin by the roadside. To ensure it is collected, it must be placed before 8:30 AM.
    • Please place your bin opposite your trash and recycling bins. This will facilitate the work of collection trucks.
  3. Once your bin has been collected, a new clean bin will be left in the same spot. It will have its red lever raised.

Important!

Please do not put any plastic in your bin. Biodegradable or compostable plastic bags are not accepted. The only accepted bags are brown paper bags.

The kitchen container can be used without a bag or with a paper bag. The one offered and highly recommended is the SAC AU SOL 7L bag. Its cellulose lining prevents leaks.

These bags can be purchased at all hardware stores, pharmacies, and grocery stores!

Attention!

We ask you, if possible, to put your bins out on the day of your collection ONLY. This will prevent ice formation and facilitate snow removal during the winter season.

Also, we ask you to close the bin lid tightly to avoid unwanted animals or insects.

Several refused materials are still found in our composter. Please check your brochure or the accepted and refused materials section to know what you can put in your bin.

NEW!

To get you started, we offer you a kitchen container with its wall mount, as well as a pack of brown bags to collect your food scraps. Contact us to receive these items!

Tip:

Put your brown paper bag in the freezer to avoid odors and liquid leaks.

According to a study by the National Zero Waste Council, the average household wastes approximately 140 kg of food each year, equivalent to $1,100 in losses (NZWC, 2017). That’s a lot of money thrown in the trash! The solution here is not to throw your food into composting; you must first reduce at the source to avoid all waste.

Recyclable Materials

Many everyday materials can be easily recycled thanks to our blue bin and bulk collection. You do not need to sort different types of materials or bag them. However, to avoid contamination of recyclable materials, bad odors, and to facilitate the work of people at the sorting center, here are some tips:

A few tips!

  1. Please rinse your containers or packaging lightly before placing them in the recycling bin.
  2. Group your plastic bags into a single, tied bag to facilitate sorting and prevent them from flying away during transport.
  3. To maximize space in your bin, we suggest flattening cardboard boxes and juice and milk containers.
  4. Separate plastic packaging from other materials (e.g., cardboard, paper, etc.)
  5. If your container is marked “Consigned,” please return it to your nearest retailer. Container deposits allow for better recycling of materials such as plastic, glass, and metal.

For more information and to find out what happens to recovered materials, visit the Recyc-Québec website.

Electronic and Computer Equipment

Did you know that when you buy a new electronic product, an eco-fee is applied? This is an additional fee applied to many everyday products to fund a program for the proper recovery and recycling of these products.

Electronic and computer products contain several materials that can be recovered and recycled, such as glass, plastic, gold, silver, copper, and palladium. These materials do not decompose and can be dangerous for the environment, so it is important to bring your electronic products to a drop-off point when they reach the end of their useful life. This is the Recycle My Electronics TM program.

These materials should be brought to a drop-off point if they are at the end of their useful life. However, if they are still in good condition, see Equipment in good condition (below).

Electronic products must be protected from the elements to allow for proper recycling. It is also important not to leave your electronic products on the ground.

Construction Waste

Before starting your construction, renovation, or demolition (CRD) work, you must first think about the residues and waste you will produce. Several CRD residues can be recovered and recycled and/or valorized if they are properly separated. Indeed, separating different materials at the source (e.g., wood, drywall, metals) helps prevent contamination between materials and allows for better recovery of these materials.

A few tips!

  • Before starting work, plan locations to create piles for each type of material.
  • Plan demolition in several stages and separate different materials at the source. Remove materials that can be recovered or recycled indoors before demolishing the building.

Construction, renovation, or demolition waste must be brought to an eco-center or a CRD sorting center.

If you plan to undertake construction or renovation work, it is possible to opt for ecological materials or design strategies. Here are some examples of possible actions to apply during construction to reduce your ecological footprint while opting for durability:

  • Opt for eco-materials with a lower environmental impact, from production to disposal (e.g., reused materials)
  • Opt for durable materials with a longer lifespan
  • Superior insulation helps prevent energy and thus economic losses
  • Opt for renewable energies (e.g., solar panels)
  • Choose your materials based on their energy efficiency (e.g., heating, lighting, hot water, appliances)
  • Opt for materials that will produce the least waste. Pay attention to surplus and plan the quantity of materials you will need

For more information on ecological actions you can apply during construction and for examples of ecological materials to use, consult the Guide to Environmental Resources in Wôlinak for New Homeowners.

Bulky Items / Refrigeration Appliances

Have your furniture or appliances seen better days? Can’t stand to look at them anymore? The first question to ask yourself is: can they still be useful to someone else? You might know someone in your circle who could use them. Reuse should always be our first thought.

Next, if you want to get rid of your furniture that has reached the end of its life, you can do so via curbside collection or an eco-center. For refrigeration appliances, another option is available.

RIGIDBNY performs curbside collection four times a year. We suggest using this service only when your items are at the end of their life or in poor condition.

These appliances contain halocarbons in their foams and pipes. These are greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. Therefore, refrigeration appliances must be recycled properly to prevent the emission of these halocarbons. Puresphera, a company in Bécancour, is the only company in Quebec that captures and destroys 99.99% of the halocarbons contained in appliances, in addition to recycling up to 96% of the various manufacturing materials.

“A single improperly recycled refrigerator generates as much pollution as a car traveling 17,000 km in one year.” – Puresphera

These two practices are simple and effective!

Grasscycling consists of leaving grass clippings on the lawn after mowing. This allows the soil to maintain adequate moisture and protects it from certain diseases. Also, clippings are a natural fertilizer, so you will need to take care of your lawn less.

There is also the Dandelion Challenge, which involves delaying the first lawn mowing to allow dandelions and other flowers to grow. This provides an important food source for pollinators. They will then be able to help pollinate our fruit trees, among other things.

Leafcycling involves recycling your dead leaves in a way other than taking them to the recycling center. To avoid transporting dead leaves, it is suggested to mow your leaves on site; this way, they will enrich the soil during their decomposition, which will be faster than when the leaves are whole. This practice allows the soil to retain its moisture and obtain natural fertilizer, in addition to making your life easier!

For more information, consult RIGIDBNY-Grasscycling

Here’s what you can do with your tree after the holiday season:

If you wish to dispose of your Christmas tree, it must be stripped of all its decorations and brought to one of the drop-off points before January 10, 2024.

A door-to-door collection will be carried out on January 9, 2024 in the community. We ask that you please remove all decorations from your tree and place it at the curb. Thank you for putting it out only on the morning of the collection.
